After a hard shake (~25% dilution): total volume becomes 3.5 × 1.25 = 4.375 oz. Final ABV: 0.8 / 4.375 × 100 = 18.3%. That’s what goes in the glass — not 40%, not 22.9%.
Proof vs. ABV — The Quick Conversion
US proof is exactly double the ABV percentage. A spirit at 40% ABV is 80 proof; 50% ABV is 100 proof. The “proof” system dates to 18th-century British gunpowder testing, where spirits were mixed with gunpowder and ignited. If the powder still burned, the spirit was “proved” to be at least 57.1% ABV — which is why UK proof was historically calculated differently (ABV × 1.75). The US simplified to the ÷2 convention.
