Why Taming Effectiveness Drops the Way It Does

Higher wild levels make this worse because there’s simply more torpor to manage and more time for things to go wrong. That’s the main reason a level 150 Rex is so much harder to keep at full effectiveness than a level 30 one, even though the food formula itself scales in a fairly predictable way.

Effectiveness also reacts to the food type you use. Kibble and superior kibble are gentler on effectiveness loss per feeding cycle than raw meat, which is part of why kibble taming feels so much more forgiving even when it takes a similar amount of real-world time.

Working Through the Formula by Hand

The rough relationship the calculator uses is: food needed scales with wild level multiplied by the dino’s base food requirement and the food-type multiplier, then divided by your server’s taming speed rate. Narcotics follow a similar pattern but use the dino’s base torpor value instead of its food value.

Take a level 120 Rex on an official-rate server using raw meat. Food needed comes out to roughly 120 × 2.5 × 4.5, divided by 1, which lands around 1,350 units before rounding adjustments specific to the dino. Swap that same dino onto a 5x unofficial server and the figure drops to around 270 units, which is the entire reason unofficial servers feel so much faster to tame on.

A Real Scenario From a Long Tame

Say you’re taming a level 180 Spino on a 3x server using superior kibble. Plug those numbers in and you’re looking at a noticeably shorter food requirement than the same level on raw meat, but you’ll still need to babysit the narcotics closely because Spinos have a torpor-drain pattern that punishes inattention more than most other carnivores. Miss two narcotic windows in a row and you can watch a near-perfect tame slide down to the 60% range in minutes.

One detail that catches people out: torpor depletion isn’t perfectly linear near the very end of a tame, so the last 10% of progress often needs slightly more narcotic attention than the maths alone suggests.

Getting the Most Out of Your Food and Narcotics

  • Always carry roughly 20% more food than the calculator suggests, since knockouts rarely happen at the exact level you expected
  • Check torpor every couple of minutes on high-level tames rather than waiting for a notification
  • Kibble taming is worth the extra prep time on anything above level 100, purely for the effectiveness buffer it gives you

None of this replaces watching the dino directly. The calculator gets you in the right ballpark, but server lag, multiplier stacking events, and tribe mate interference can all shift the real numbers slightly from what any formula predicts.
