How to Calculate Body Shape Using Height and Weight — Formula

The body shape calculator uses three formulas to give you a complete picture:

1. BMI (Body Mass Index)

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m²)

BMI tells you whether your weight is healthy relative to your height. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal.

2. Body Shape Classification

Your body shape is determined by comparing your bust, waist, and hip measurements:

Body ShapeCondition
HourglassBust ≈ Hips, Waist significantly smaller
Pear (Triangle)Hips > Bust by 5+ cm, defined waist
Inverted TriangleBust > Hips by 5+ cm
Apple (Round)Waist is the widest point
Rectangle (Straight)Bust ≈ Waist ≈ Hips (small differences)

3. Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)

WHR = Waist (cm) ÷ Hips (cm)

A WHR below 0.80 (women) or below 0.90 (men) is generally considered a healthy range.

Example

Inputs:

  • Gender: Female
  • Height: 165 cm
  • Weight: 62 kg
  • Bust: 92 cm, Waist: 68 cm, Hips: 96 cm

Calculations:

  • BMI = 62 ÷ (1.65²) = 62 ÷ 2.7225 = 22.8 → Normal
  • Hips (96) > Bust (92) by 4 cm; Hip–Waist diff = 28 cm → Pear / Hourglass
  • WHR = 68 ÷ 96 = 0.71 → Healthy

Result: Hourglass shape, BMI 22.8 (Normal), WHR 0.71

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a body shape calculator?
A body shape calculator is a tool that uses your height, weight, and key body measurements — bust, waist, and hips — to classify your body type into one of five common shapes: hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, or inverted triangle. It also calculates your BMI and waist-to-hip ratio.

How do I calculate my body shape using height and weight?
You calculate body shape by height and weight using BMI for your overall weight status, and bust-waist-hip ratios for your shape type. Enter your measurements into the calculator above and it does all the math for you automatically.

What are the 5 main body shapes?
The five main body shapes are: Hourglass (balanced bust and hips with defined waist), Pear (wider hips than bust), Inverted Triangle (wider bust/shoulders than hips), Apple (wider midsection), and Rectangle (similar bust, waist, and hip measurements). Most people fall into one of these categories.

Is BMI the same as body shape?
No. BMI measures your weight relative to your height and indicates whether you are underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. Body shape is about your proportions — where your body stores fat and how your measurements are distributed. Both are useful but measure different things.

What body shape is the healthiest?
Research suggests the hourglass and pear shapes are associated with lower health risks compared to the apple shape, which indicates more abdominal fat. However, BMI and waist-to-hip ratio are better health indicators than body shape alone. Always consult a doctor for personalized health advice.
